Rise of a Legend
Maniratnam and A R Rahman

1992, August 15 Roja, a film by Maniratnam, the legendary Director of Indian Cinema with introducing a new music composer named A R Rahman and the rest is history. It was the birth of a legend in the world of cinema. At that time Ilaiyaraja was the uncrowned king of Tamil music Industry and it was a huge risk for every film maker to introduce a composer to compete with him. But the producer of the movie was not in good term with Ilaiyaraja and Maniratnam was forced to find another composer for his movie. At that time Maniratnam’s cousin Shrada and her husband Trilok told him about A R Rahman, a 24 year old young chap, who was making music for their advertisements and about his phenomenal skills and talent in music. Mani moved on to take a try and went over to the studio of Rahman to check out his work. After listening to some of his music, the reticent Maniratnam left the studio and Rahman didn’t get any reply from him for months. But a few months later Maniratnam called him up with an offer to compose for his movie and that gave Rahman a breakthrough in the film Roja. That was the beginning of one of the best Moviemaker- Musician combo of Indian cinema.

Now it’s been more than 25 years on the successful collaboration of these two legends. But while talking about their work there’s another factor which is inevitable. In most of the compositions of Rahman for Maniratnam’s movie the songs completes with the lyrics of Vairamuthu. The result when this trio unites is nothing less than a magic.
Maniratnam is not only
a director for A R Rahman, he’s is
like a mentor, an elder
brother and a guardian for him. He is only director who has the
freedom to give advices to him and has a good touch with rahman’s
personal life as well. The director who makes innovative movies and the composer discovering new innovations in music, of course it is the perfect combination and we are lucky for this and experiencing this delight.
